The Hathaway Brown Benches are a series of eight benches which are located outside the entrance to Hathaway Brown School Primary School in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The benches are used every day throughout the school year for drop off and pick up of students ages 2-10.
Each bench has two concrete blocks that act as seats for adults and long planks which are the seat height for children. Each bench has two seat planks which are connected by a series of stainless steel dowels.
The benches are made from urban harvested Osage Orange, concrete, and stainless steel dowels. The Osage Orange was specifically selected as it's natural tannins allow it to withstand harsh environmental elements including extreme heat and cold. It is a weather resistant wood which does not require maintenance or refinishing over time.
